Resumen

In general, adjectives in Hoocąk and other Siouan languages (North America) do not have any adjective-like inflection found in more familiar European languages. There is no grammatical agreement with the head noun of a NP in gender, case and number. Likewise, there are no derivational processes that derive adjectives from nouns, and adjectives from verbs, respectively. In addition, Siouan adjectives lack a grammaticalized category of comparison. On the other hand, Siouan adjectives inflect like intransitive inactive/ stative verbs, if used as predicates in intransitive clauses. This fact has led most of the researchers to claim that there is no distinct class of adjectives in Siouan languages. Adjectives were analyzed as a subcategory of verbs. However, a closer inspection of the data available for Siouan languages shows that this overall picture needs to be refined. The proposed paper will present a comparative study of adjectives (property words) in Siouan languages looking exactly for the grammatical and distributional differences that set property words apart from other intransitive inactive verbs in those languages. The goal is to describe the morphosyntactic and distributional variation of adjectives (property words) in a selection of Siouan languages that are sufficiently documented covering all sub-branches of Siouan. The results will be discussed and evaluated in the light of previous research on the theory and typology of adjectives in the literature.
